A: A key element of success is to integrate exercise into your everyday life and to think of it as a part of your daily routine rather than as an additional task you must accomplish. By adopting a more physically active lifestyle, you are likely to improve your health and feel more energetic.
To become more physically active, examine your daily routine to find opportunities to add 5 to 15-minute sessions of moderate-intensity activity -- the kind that increases your breathing or elevates your heart rate. Research shows that for unconditioned adults 30 minutes of accumulated physical activity a day has similar benefits to exercising at a gym or taking a formal exercise class for the same amount of time.
Also try performing simple exercises while talking on the phone, using the computer, or even watching television. If you’re driving somewhere, park a bit farther away from your destination than normal to fit in some extra walking. If you have an appointment in an office building, plan to arrive 15 minutes early to walk around outside, in the hallways, up and down stairs, etc.
Make physical activity interesting by charting your progress. You can purchase a simple step counter to keep track of how far you’re walking a day. Make note of all of the exercise you do in a day and then work to increase the amount each week.
Many people also find it helpful to have a partner to walk with or to encourage them in other ways. Whatever method you choose, recognize that exercise is something that should be a part of your everyday life. Be sure to visit with your doctor, to determine how best to proceed.
